What is the Kids Learning Space Arduino SbS Getting Started?

This Tech Explorations Kids Learning Space course is designed for school-age students who have an interest in STEM studies and in particular in electronics. Using the Arduino as a learning tool, this course will introduce the student to the world of electronics, creativity, and making.

In designing this course, we emphasized the importance of getting the basics right and learning to mastery. Dr Peter Dalmaris, the designer and main instructor and author of Maker Education Revolution, has been an an educator since 2000 and has been teaching exclusively online since 2013. In designing this course he used everything he learned during those years, and applied the principles of maker education.

The result is a course that we believe is the first of its kind, any where in the world. It combines a variety of instruments and practices that aim to produce graduates that have mastered everything that is course covers, and prepares students for life-long learning in a high-tech society.

Here are the main features of the course:

  • Complete curriculum, regulated with drip-fed content. This ensures that learning takes place without the student becoming overwhelmed.
  • Each lecture consist of a short instructional and demonstration video.
  • Each lecture contains a short quiz to help the student reinforce the main concepts taught
  • Each lecture contains study notes in PDF format. These notes can be downloaded for the student to use off-line. They may be printed, or read on the computer.
  • Each lecture contains links to external web resources. These may be the software code and schematics that were discussed in the class, or online resources for further learning.
  • Lectures are organized in section. Each section is designed to teach a specific skill. A block of one week is given for a student to complete a section, before moving on to the next one.
  • Each section contains mini-projects. These project give the student the opportunity to learn by doing.
  • Each section contains a graded quiz, in which the student tests the knowledge they acquired.

Apart from the lecture and section resources, the Kid's Learning Space also offers:

  • Fortnightly live webinars. These webinars provide additional educational content on topics relevant to the course content, or assistance to students. Webinars are available to Maker and Explorer level students only.
  • Help Desk support. At any time that the student needs help, they may use the Help Desk. The Help Desk connects students with expert mentors, who are certified to work with children, and are vetted by Tech Explorations. Students will never interact with anyone outside of Tech Explorations who is not trained and vetted to help children with their study. Help Desk support is available to Maker and Explorer level students only.
  • Knowledge Base. The knowedge base contains practical guides on the most common technical issues that our students may come across. It is designed to quickly unloblck a student's progress.
  • A private Facebook group. This group is open to all KLS students and their parents or guardians. Student can post photographs and videos of their creations, interact with other students and mentors. Parents and guardians can discuss learning and teaching issues with other members. This group is constantly monitored by Tech Explorations to ensure that it is a safe and comfortable environment for for all our members.
  • Course completion certificate. When the student completes the requirements of the course, which includes completing all lectures and quizzes, they will be awarded a completion certificate!

The Kid's Learning Space Arduino Step by Step Getting Started contains more than 15 hours of instructional video and other materials and activities that is spread out over 17 weeks. During this time, the student learns, makes, and constantly improves their grasp of the technology itself, but also the important life-long learning skills of

  • grit through problem solving (the ability to persist with a problem until it is solved),
  • thinking like an inventor (problem-lead, make, test, learn, improve, repeat),
  • communication (with mentors and other students),
  • developing a growth mindset as they build confidence based on their real ability to create things

This is surely not an easy course. Maker and STEM education is about learning, making and teaching, and all of that is hard at start. We are here to support the learning journey of our students and help them accomplish both the specific learning objectives outlined above and the "soft" skills that tomorow's leaders will need.

What is the Kids Learning Space?

The KLS is a new way for children to learn online. This video describes the basic attributes and philosophy that make the KLS a unique place to learn.

Who is the ideal student for this course?

We have designed this course for students, over 11 years of age, who are able to use a computer independently, or with assistance available closely, a thirst to learn about technology, and a drive for making things.

Examples of ideal students would be:

  • Students who are studying at home (homeschooling) and plan to use this course as a major unit for one term of learning
  • Students of distance education and plan to use this course as a major unit for one term of learning
  • Conventional school students who and plan to use this course as a supplement assigned study
  • Members of maker spaces who appreciate a structured approach to learning

However, the course can be used and customized for any number of circumstances:

  • Libraries can make it available to their patrons
  • Teachers can adopt it for use in their classrooms
  • Teachers can use it as part of their own professional development and education

Course content and alignment with the Australian Curriculum

The curriculum in this course is suitable for students aged 11 years old or older. In Australia, this translates to students enrolled in years 6 and over, or equivalent.

What are the enrollment options?

We offer this course at three levels:

  • Discoverer
  • Maker
  • Explorer

All three levels of access include all course materials. The only difference is in the level of support that we provide to the student.

Let's look at the details


At the Discoverer level, there is no help desk support, and no access to the scheduled webinars. The Discoverer student has access to all video and downloadable content, as well as the quizzes, the certificate of completion, and the private Facebook group.

A Discovered-level enrollment is best for students that already have a mentor who can assist them.


At the Maker level, the student gets access to help desk support and all scheduled webinars, as well as everything else that the Discoverer has access too.

A Maker is entitled to asking questions via the help desk and access the Knowledge Base for answers to the most common problems.

A Maker-level enrollment is best for students that don't have access to a mentor, or at least someone who can help them get through blocks in the learning process.


At the Explorer-level, the student gets access to everything that the Maker-level student gets, as well as a dedicated mentor which whom the student can have direct communication via the Help Desk and email. On top of the scheduled regular webinars, the Explorer also has access to a half hour video chat weekly that can be used towards educational or problem solving discussions.

An Explorer-level enrollment is best for students that don't have a mentor, need additional special support and coaching in their learning journey, or perhaps feel the need to speed up their learning.

Do you offer coaching?

If you need a one-on-one video chat session to help you with your learning you can purchase time tokens. Each token entitles you to 30 minutes of one-on-one video coaching with one of our mentors.

The token price covers the cost of our mentor communicating with the student in order to understand the nature of the question, researching it in order to provide a solution with high educational value (not simply to solve the student's problem), and to deliver the 30-minute private webinar where the solution is discussed with the student.

Explorer-level students have 2 mentor coupons per month to use at a time of their choice (up to 4 tokens can be accumulated at a time before they elapse).

Students that are enrolled at the Discoverer and Maker level can purchase mentor tokens at any time.

What will mentors do and not do in a coaching session?

Our coaching service is specifically offered to help students with the learning journey in the context of this specific course. Our mentors will not assist students with things such as school assignments or projects, unless they are directly related to Arduino Step by Step Getting Started.

Further, our mentors will never give students a solution to a problem, be it programmatic, diagrammatic or anything else. We believe that learner must work hard to solve their own problems. This is a core premise of Make Education. The role of the mentor is to create an environment that is conducive of learning, assist with educational materials and help the learner navigate through the complex maze that is the learning process.

All of our mini projects and major projects have been designed to be well within the capabilities of our students, taking into account how these capabilities increase over time.

Can I work on my own project during the course?
Of course, and we do encourage doing just that. Keep in mind, however, that we cannot provide direct support to you in relation to your project.
Will I need to purchase components?
Yes. The course is practical and it depends on students working on real hardware, not simulated. You can purchase the hardware you need from our shop or the open market. A list of components is available.
